My Dad

As I posted the post on Little Bug, I realized today is the 23rd anniversary of my Dad's death. After 23 years, we as a family have Saint-ified my Dad as we remember him. Was he a godly man? Absolutely!!!!!! His faith was very strong. He trusted the Lord in all things. He was a kind man. He was a loving man. Did he have faults? Of course. But......... like I said, over the years we have Saintifed the man, so here are some of my most precious memories of my DAD.

I would accompany Dad on business errands. He always had his hand on my shoulders, actually neck. He would direct me in which way to go with his hand on my neck. Daddy agonized as he made decisions. He would talk out loud to himself about whatever issue he was trying to resolve. He loved to listen to music as he worked. He listened to all genre of music from the classics to country western. Just prior to my coming to the US for college, dad took me to the park in down town Goiania and taught me how to balance a check book. Dad was a mathematician and loved numbers. His students could never get him to round up their grades. If they got an 8.563 (Brazilian system of grading was on a scale of 1 to 10.), that is what grade they got. On our wedding day, Jerry brought a sermonette. While Jerry spoke about heaven and earth, my Dad looked up toward heaven and then down to earth following Jerry's words. Then it came Dad's turn to pray. He did so for the same amount of time as Jerry had spoken, while...... Jay and I kneeled for those 8 agonizing minutes. Dad loved to tinker with all kinds of things. I love the photo of my Dad working on something in my home's entry way with his grandchildren around him. He would be as proud of our "Little Bug" as he was of all his other family members.

Daddy, I love you and miss you.

We have been on the run since Little Bug was born so I just saw this post. How neat. Yes, our Daddy was a great man! I too remember him leading me by the neck. I remember sitting at that park in Goiania talking about some of the ballads on his RECORDS. I also remember the exact spot where he taught me to balance a check book - Grandmother Helton's sofa. That was very important to Daddy. He also felt it very important for us all to go to college, have brasses, own a GOOD suitcase and a typewriter (which by the way, is how I got all my papers typed in college).

Thanks for taking me down memory lane ... on this Father's Day.
